Early Spring at the Lake
In early spring
when birds begin to sing,
when days will have more light
and the old willow
already bears a touch of yellow
the lake lies wide and bright.
The dreaming trees - still bare -
stretch out their limbs to wake.
At first they only dare
some little green to take
of grass and weed
to cover their feet.
The endless sky
spreading clear and high
stains the rippling water blue.
The reeds along the shore
are dry. They sway no more,
they break giving way for new.
