On her Death
 
(To Kathy,
once mother in law of my daughter)

 

I did not know
 it was forever
once when we parted, sister.
 
Why did you throw 
your life away and never
thought of resistance, sister?
 
Was all unbearable
what threw you down so violently
and wore you out-
 
nothing comparable
in life of others showing evidently
it was to be fought out?
 
You left a trace behind
of tenderness and love
 that carries us through life
 
and we are called to find
that it is not enough
merely to care for life.
